2013 Pop Top golf results
Hello brothers. It is officially summer, that time of year when RI Beta hosts the annual golf event that we alumni wait all year for! This year 21 loyal pop toppers teed it up at Fenner Hill C.C. on Saturday, August 3. Along with the rag tag assortment of RI Beta’s this year’s event welcomed Mike Corcoran from Mass. Beta and two representatives from the National fraternity, Matt Goldsmith and Kevin Marks. Matt is new to RI Beta as the division 1 assistant alumni relations post but you all might remember Kevin the director of alumni relations from his appearance as a guest speaker at our Founder’s dinner several years ago and he did not disappoint the crowd at the pop top dinner with his presentation of the vision for RI Beta undergraduates. The attendance by Kevin and Matt at this year’s event was no coincidence. They were in town to provide alumni advisor training to Bruce “the beast” Tavares and his team for the upcoming rush and colonization in September. At dinner an award was also presented to retiring AHC secretary Jim Grueb for his years of faithful service. Funny thing is no one can remember how many years of service! I guess it is true that the memory is the first thing that goes with becoming a Phi Psi fossil. Jim enjoy your retirement but beware just when you think your out…we pull you back in!!..or at least try to… As for the golf no surprise when after missing out on last year’s event team Prattico arrived with a full compliment of team members this year. Vinny, Frank Lee, John “Goody” Goodwin and Pat “Claydo” Clays could have stopped playing after going 4 under after 5 holes to give the rest of the field a fighting chance but just like Tiger Woods getting the lead they doubled their effort and left everyone else in the dust..I mean sand trap by posting 8 under par to take the title. Other winners; long putt won by Dennis Pelletier, closest to the pins went to Andy “Monk” Marcoux and Eric Hall and in the hard to believe category having played with Jake for so many years this years manly long drive contest was won by no other than Jake Cannon. As for yours truly my prize was not won playing in this year’s event but having Susie the lovely beer cart girl drive me around the course to watch all you guys play…Congratulations to all the winners and a special thank you to Andy Marcoux for all his efforts throughout the year to keep this event a fixture on our social calendar. Can’t wait for next year’s event!! Stay tuned for updates on the colonization this fall and see you all at Founder’s dinner in April 2014. Fraternally CC#400.
